Bayeux Bunny Bookmark

This bookmark was made as a sample for my class in laid work.  The focus of the class was primarily on the Bayeux Tapestry, so I chose to use the diagonal dividing lines that are common throughout.  The bunny and cinquefoil designs are based off my daughter's proposed device.  Since she's the one that will be using the bookmark when I retire the class, I let her make some choices on the colors and designs.  Although frince isn't really my style, she wanted fringe on all sides.

If you take a close look at the animals on the Bayeux Tapestry, you will notice that the embroiderers often used color to show perspective.  The arms and legs that are closest to the viewer tend to match the color of the body.  The arms and legs that are in the distance, are almost always a different color .  For example, if you take a look at the yellow horse, the two yellow legs are in the foreground, and the red and blue legs are in the background.  When doing the bookmark, my daugther wanted her bunny to match, so I kept the entire bunny brown.

The design was completed in Paternayan Crewel wool on 28-count linen.  The linen on the Bayeux Tapestry was much finer, but since it was for a beginner-level class, I chose to use an evenweave fabric.  I worked the bookmark in a locking oval hoop, because it was the same hoop that my students would work with.

I liked the way some of the Bayeux images show different colors for the satin stitches and the couched bars.  My daughter let me embroider the bunny in brown satin stitches, with green couched bars and stem stitch.  She was very pleased with the results..  The two bars orange-yellow and brown-green bars in the center of the bookmark were deliberately uneven, in order to replicate the hand-made found on the Bayeux Tapestry.  The cinquefoil is completed in yellow, and outlined in rust.

Once the embroidery was completed, I applied a rectangle of brown felt to the back., and attached it to the bookmark with buttonhole stitch. I then did several rows of stem stitch, just for decoration.
