Georg's Fleur-de-lys Favor

This favor belongs to Viscount Sir Georg of Glacier's Edge, and was presented to him when I became his apprentice.   I chose the red fleur-de-lys because I have them on my heraldic device.

After sketching the fleur-de-lys on linen lined with muslin, I darkened a few of the areas so I could do some shading for a three-dimensional effect.  I used two shades of red 11/0 glass beads.  I predominantly used the medieval method of beadwork, laying and couching, and then followed up with a back stitch to secure the beads.

Once the embroidery was completed, I applied glue to the back and let it dry overnight.  Next, I stitched the fleur-de-lys onto black wool, and then lined the edge in seed pearls.  In order to ensure that the pearls were secure, I applied the pearls in threes and secured them with backstitch and couching.  After the pearl edging was done, I lined the favor with blue linen fabric, since Georg's colors are red, blue and white.

Project totals:

                                     64 work hours

about 3000 beads, plus two strands of pearls
